A Recovery thought. No Forced Control: Letting go of the need to manipulate every outcome or micromanage life.

Hi everyone! It’s pretty hot today. It’s a good 34° Celsius (93.2 Fahrenheit) in my area. I’ve decided to stay home. What am I doing? I’m just thinking anyway… So a little while ago, I found myself thinking about compulsory military service in Switzerland again. I just don’t think it’s right for the state to (involuntarily) turn a person into a murderer. I know, of course, that in war we don’t talk about murder. But that’s where the questions start. For me, though, if I were to kill an enemy soldier in war, I’d feel like I’d murdered someone. Every single time, a life is taken. A person with a past, a present, and no future—someone with whom I might have had a delightful conversation under different circumstances. That’s so completely absurd. It’s not schizophrenic—it’s beyond schizophrenic, if you want to misuse the term colloquially once again. I’m also well aware that I’ve left out some dynamics here. How would I react if my loved ones’ lives were threatened? In that case, I suppose I would commit murder after all. This sad dilemma preoccupies me from time to time. I’m glad I’m not in that situation, and I feel compassion for those who have to go through it and are somewhat aware of what they’re doing. Fortunately, I have an advantage here as a person with a mental illness. During my fitness-for-duty evaluation, they asked me if I’d actually like to serve in the military; I said I didn’t know. They laughed, and I was out of there.

Sometimes I feel the need to learn more about how other people live and how some even find a life melody that suits them. A while back, I came across Justine and Michael’s work. I think they do a great job of creating multifaceted video portraits. Whenever I take the time to watch one, I’m always impressed by the subtlety and the messages they convey. Maybe you’d like to check one out now?
